Valerian Herb For Sleep Disorders

Valeriana officinalis, commonly known as the valerian herb, has been widely used as a natural anxiety supplement and a natural remedy for sleep disorders for a very long time.

As a matter of fact, the prominent Greek born Roman physician Galen, recommended the herb as a treatment for insomnia in the second century.






Since the mid 19th century, the herb has gained popularity with European and American doctors and lay people - both groups using it as a sedative.

The valerian herb has earned the trust of a group of scientists called Commission E, who recommended the medicine to the government of Germany.

Other than herb's ability to induce quality sleep, it is purported to have medicinal properties that: reduce muscle spasms, prevent instances of convulsions, relieve pain, stimulate appetite, lower blood pressure, improve digestion and reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

If you have a challenging job, you'd be pleased to know that a British study published in 2002 points out the valerian also fights stress. Some people consume the herb along with St. John's Wort and passionflower to reduce symptoms of anxiety as well.

No prescription is needed to get the herb; many health food stores and pharmacies sell valerian herbal extracts in the forms of capsules, tea and drops. 

No significant valerian side effects are known but be sure not to overdose on it nor use it regularly.

Regular use may lead to psychological dependence which is not good because you want to train your body to fall asleep naturally and not rely on any sleeping aid.

Following the dosage outlined on any valerian product you acquire is advisable. Should you be in doubt as to the dosage, taking around 400 to 900 milligrams of the herb 30-60 minites before going to bed should be sufficient to give you a good night's rest.



Bear in mind that long term use of thee herb could cause health problems such as
hepatotoxicity, that is liver damage or impairment of the central nervous system.

Improper use or overdosing could also lead to can lead to headaches, a blurry vision, grogginess, and nausea.
