Goldenseal Herb - The Healing Wonders Goldenseal or orangeroot, is a yellow-colored rootstock with hairy stem that is about a foot in height. It is characterized by having large leaf on one branch, and a flower and a small leaf on another.Flowers are eminent during April to May with leaves that may grow as large as eight inches in diameter, with raspberry-like head outgrowth when ripened. Perennial in nature, it grows mostly on shady woods, damp meadows in the wild specifically in the United States. This herb is also commercially cultured in areas like Connecticut and Minnesota for different active herbal products. Generally, it is considered a natural cure for colds and flu; diarrhea; earaches; vaginal irritation; stomach disorders such as constipation, stomachache, indigestion and even ulcer. It is also used for mouth problems like sore mouth and throat, and gingivitis. This herb has an alkaloid compound berberine, which is effective in treatment of cornea and iris inflammations caused by the virus, herpes simplex. Berberine has natural anti-bacterial effect against tapeworms and giardia and has white blood cell activation capabilities. Goldenseal can increase digestive secretion. Its astringent action checks the inflamed area of the gut lining. However, for stomach-related problems, this remedy must not be used for long periods of time since it can radically lower the gut’s nutrient absorption capacity, particularly B vitamins. Although it is not advisable to take this herb while still pregnant, it is believed that this herbal remedy can help female specific problems. It can reduce heavy menstrual bleeding or cure yeast infection of the vagina. A herbal mixture can be prepared by blending one and a half tablespoons of powdered root in three cups of water. This then can be used several times to douche infected areas. There are also capsules, tinctures and ointments available in the market.
