Goji Berry - Improving Health - Promoting Longevity

The goji berry has long been a staple of Chinese, Indian and Tibet Medicines. For thousands of years, these Eastern cultures have used this fruit to strengthen to:

Boost The Immune System
Improve Circulation
Promote Health Sexual Function
Promote Healthy Eyesight
Promote Longevity
Protect The Liver

What Is Goji?

The berry goes by many other names - bastrad jasmine, box thorn, gou qi zi, lycium fruit, tea tree, matrimony vine and wolfberry. It is native to Asia and South Eastern Europe.

Like many other berries, goji is rich in antioxidants such as carotenoids and zeaxanthin.

Health Benefits

There have been in vitro studies that reveal that consuming the goji fruit will increase immunity, lower cholesterol, prevent the growth of cancer cells and reduce blood sugar. However, larger, better designed clinical trials need to be done before goji lycium's potential can be verified.

There are unscrupulous marketers who claim that the goji berry can prevent cancer. But no dietary health supplement manufacturer is allowed to make such a claim.

Not only that - no clinical trial done so far has revealed a natural or pharmaceutical agent that can categorically prevent cancer. At best, such agents can only reduce the risks of getting certain types of cancer.

Having said that, a study done in China and published in the Chinese Journal of Oncology in 1994 found that cancer patients responded better to treatment when goji was added to their health care regimen. It remains to be seen if this is the case for all forms of cancer treatments.

Goji Side Effects

More research needs to be done on the side effects of eating the goji berry. There needs to be a big enough clinical trial to determine this.

To date, only small observational studies and anecdotal reports critique or support the therapeutic value of the fruit.

Nonetheless, it is important to remember that before you take a goji supplement or any nutritional supplement for that matter, seek your doctor's advice first. This is especially true if you are pregnant or on medication.

If you are on anticoagulants - be especially careful. There was a case of a woman on the anticoagulant warafin who developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) after drinking a Chinese herbal tea made from goji. Basically, she experienced increased bleeding.

Goji juice is often marketed under the names Himalayan Goji and Tibetan Goji. It is often claimed that berries grown in Tibet are organically grown and therefore healthier than those grown in other areas.

However this claim has come under intense scrutiny, many claiming that pesticides have also been used in the Tibetan plateau.
