Boswellia Serrata - Some Very Powerful Health Benefits

Boswellia Serrata, also known as Indian frankincense or Olibanum tree, is a medium-sized tree that belongs to the family Bruseraceae.

This tree, with ash-colored bark and small white flowers, thrives in dry and hilly areas and it is native to India. When the boswella tree trunk is tapped, an oleoresin is excreted. The extract of this resin has been used by ayurvedic experts as treatment for many conditions.

For hundreds of years in India, this plant has been reputed as effective treatment for inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis and bursitis.

Many studies found that when you take boswella, it can help to improve blood supply to the joint. This helps restore the condition of vessels that have been weakened by spasm.

Its bark has been used to soothe conditions such as asthma and cough, and has been used to alleviate convulsions, chronic laryngitis, jaundice, urethrorrhea and diaphoresis.

Some studies have identified the active anti-inflammatory components of this herb. These components are referred to as boswellic acids.

In animal and lab studies, boswellic acids have significantly reduced inflammation by inhibiting inflammatory white cells from intruding damaged tissue. These properties also block chemical reactions that can result in inflammation in chronic intestinal disorders.

Promisingly, boswella has been indicated in death of cancer cells, particularly brain tumors and cells affected by leukemia or colon cancer.

Other benefits include its effect on people with chronic colitis. A study lead by the Department of Medicine of the Medical College Jammu in India showed them very promising results.

The results show that 70 percent of patients given boswellic gum resin, after six weeks, had improved conditions. 40% of those given sulfasalazine, a pharmaceutical drug used in treating colitis, went into remission after six weeks.

Aside from being popular as ingredient in ayurvedic formulations for curing arthritis and asthma, boswella has also used as incense in India due to its fragrance and as an anti-aging cream.

Boswellia wrinkle cream has been used to eliminate fine lines and age spots as well as tighten sagging skin.

Although experts generally believe that when you take boswellia supplements there should be very little or no safety issues, in rare cases you can experience minor gastrointestinal upset or nausea.

Because of this, people with gastroesophageal or gastrointestinal disorders, preganant women or individuals on prescription medication should seek their doctors' advice before using this herb.

Taking into consideration that boswella has been safely used for ages in ayurvedic treatments and that it has some very promising scientific evidence behind it, there seems to be little to worry about when taking it.

Once you use it as directed, you should more than likely experience nothing but the health benefits.
