Black Cohosh Benefits For more than two hundred years, Native Americans have used black cohosh plant to treat many health conditions, such as gynecological disorders, sore throats, depression and kidney problems. In modern times, it has also been used as dietary supplement for women suffering from symptoms of premenstrual tension. Moreover, it is also now used as treatment to irritability, mood swings and sleep disturbances. A recent study has also suggested that this herb has properties beneficial for age-related disorders, such as osteoporosis. It contains complex biological molecules, such as triterpene glycosides, which have been reputed to reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and neuralgia. According to Dr. James Duke, noted herbal researcher, black cohosh herb is an effective treatment for hot flashes and other menopause-related conditions because of its mild sedative properties. It has also been reported to contain some estrogenic properties, which can help replace estrogen for ageing women. It has been reported to be a lot better than the conventional estrogen replacement therapy. Moreover, a recent study concludes that this herb, when combined with guaiacum, poplar bark, and willow bark can help relieve osteoarthritis symptoms. Blackcohosh Side Effects There are no studies yet that shows proof that the herb is safe for long-term use. But, there have been some doubts as to its efficacy and interactions with medication. Although many people using blackcohosh have not experience any adverse effects, a few individuals reported liver damage after using the herb. Other reported side effects include headaches, diarrhea, dizziness, low heart beat rate, low blood pressure, seizures and weight problems. Moreover, in a transgenic mouse model of cancer, it has shown to increase metastasis of pre-existing cancer from breast to the lungs. It, however, did not show to increase the risk of developing breast cancer. The use and dosages of the herb today, especially in Western medicine, may differ from how it was or is being used in cultural or traditional settings. Thus, before considering to use of black cohosh supplements especially if you on prescription drugs, pregnant, breastfeeding, or thinking about giving it to a child, please consult your physician first. |
