Ashwagandha Supplements – The Amazing Health Benefits


Ashwagandha (withania somnifera), also known as winter cherry  or Indian ginseng, is one of the most valuable herbs used in African and traditional Indian medicine.

This herb medicine, which grows as a shrub, belongs to the Solanacea or nightshade family. Like tomato, which also belongs to this family, this plant bears red fruit and produces yellow flower.

Uses of Ashwagandha

Ashwaganda is used in Ayurveda, an Indian system of holistic medicine. The plant’s root is known for its adaptogenic properties, psychological agents that can improve the body’s resistance to physical and emotional stress.


This plant has been used in India to promote soothe the mind and to have emotional balance. As such, it is also known as natural remedy for stress and anxiety.

It has also been known used to treat a wide range of health conditions, including arthritic inflammation, respiratory disorders, anxiety, insomnia, emphysema, nervous and gynecological disorders, and asthma.

Other benefits include its ability to help treat immonu-comprised diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases and tuberculosis. It also appears to prevent swelling, and improve memory.

Studies on ashwaganda has suggested that this herb has anti-inflammatory,  anti-stress, antioxidant, anti-tumor, mind enhancer, rejuvenating properties. Because of this, it has been used in ayurvedic herbal formulas.

Researchers asserted that some of the components of ashwaganda are powerful antioxidants. Tested on rat brains, this herb was found to show increase in the levels of three natural antioxidants: catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase.

Ashwagandha Side Effects

No studies have proven yet that ashwagandha supplements have any harmful side effects on humans or is addictive once taken within the recommended dosage. Thus, extracts of this herb can be taken on a regular basis or 2-3 times a day.


In India, ayurvedic practitioners are using this herb in all age groups with both males and females experiencing good results.

Ashwaganda capsules, powder or tinctures are not recommended for pregnant or breast-feeding women, for those on prescription medication or individuals with digestive disorders or ulcers.

Liquid preparations that include sugar or alcohol are not recommended for those who have diabetes or liver disease.
